Steam Press is a boutique publisher of remarkable New Zealand science fiction and fantasy. We aim to curate the best speculative fiction in Aotearoa and present it to the world in the form of gorgeous paperbacks and svelte ebooks.

Our first book of 2014 is Paul Gilbert’s The Sovereign Hand. This is our first fantasy novel, and it has been worth the wait – Bernard Beckett has described it as “ambitious”, “wonderfully energetic”, and “a celebration of form and expression”, while Jacqui Smith has called it “quite possibly one of the best works of fantasy ever published in New Zealand”. This stunning debut will make fantasy aficionados and literary readers alike sit up and take notice.

Our 2013 titles were Joseph Edward Ryan’s The Factory World, a fantastic literary sci fi that crosses Cormac McCarthy’s The Road with The Wizard of Oz; DownMind by VO Blum, which SFFANZ described as being full of ideas that will blow your mind; and The Wind City by Summer Wigmore, a hilarious urban fantasy featuring Māori gods and monsters getting up to mischief in Wellington, which reviewers have called “a Kiwi answer to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere”.

This year is shaping up to be another big one for Steam Press. Thank you for your support, and we hope you’re having as much fun as we are.
