Steam Press is a boutique publisher of remarkable New Zealand science fiction and fantasy. We aim to curate the best speculative fiction in Aotearoa and present it to the world in the form of gorgeous paperbacks and svelte ebooks.

We are very pleased to have just released The Glass Projector by JE Ryan. This is the first children’s book to be published by Steam Press and we are immensely proud of it, and wish that we’d been able to read it when we were ten becase that would have been freaking awesome. The Glass Projector is the first of two books in the Witches of Autumn series; the second will be out in early 2015.

Our first book of 2014 was Paul Gilbert’s The Sovereign Hand. This is our first fantasy novel, and it has been worth the wait – Bernard Beckett has described it as “ambitious”, “wonderfully energetic”, and “a celebration of form and expression”, while Jacqui Smith has called it “quite possibly one of the best works of fantasy ever published in New Zealand”. This stunning debut will make fantasy aficionados and literary readers alike sit up and take notice.
